Although we can never truly predict the future, we can help set the foundations for our children. This can come in many different forms, like getting our children well-acquainted with technology and teaching them about cultural changes like marriage equality.

Our children are being brought up in the era of technology, and we should acknowledge that.

Allow Technological Use

There are so many different ways in which we can use technology to benefit ourselves. The same applies for our children. They can use technology to help them improve their writing, reading and maths skills.

They can use technology to learn more about the world around them, from watching news reports to watching videos about the weather. They can use technology to become more culturally aware, by talking to people from different countries or learning more about different cultures.

Using Technology Safely

Technology is a great thing, but that doesn’t mean we should let our children have free reign with it. We should teach them about how to use technology safely, so that they bring this awareness with them into adulthood.

This includes:

  • Teaching them about personal safety. This means not giving out personal details to strangers online and checking with their parents or guardians before talking to strangers online.
  • Once they put something up online, it stays there forever.
  • Let your child know that if someone is being mean to them, they should come to you immediately. Especially tell them that they should not be embarrassed or worried and that you will be there to help.

These are just a few ways that you can teach your child to be safe whilst using technology.

Using It In Moderation

Part of preparing them for the future involves teaching them that technology should be used in moderation.

Agree on specific intervals of time for which they can use technology, but encourage them to take a break every 15 minutes. During the break, they should stand up and go for a walk, or even use the bathroom, just so long as they spend some time away from a screen and stretch their legs.

Cultural Changes

The future our children are facing will be different to the one many of us grew up, which is why it is important to teach them about it. One of the best way to teach your child about cultural changes is to simply get them involved in them.

Attend a Charity Event

There are many events you can get involved in to help your child learn about cultural changes. For example, teach your child about rising immigration levels by attending an event organised to help refugees. Engaging them in such charity events will foster their self-confidence and self-esteem.
