Learning to Learn in Early Education
Learning is a life skill, and how we learn when we are young shapes us for how we will learn later in life. In this article, we’ll take a look at how we can help our children learn how to learn.
Incorporate Fun into Learning
When we enjoy doing something, we are more likely to continue doing it. For this reason, it’s important to make learning fun for children. Fun doesn’t mean circuses and flashing lights. It can mean teaching them how to read with books on topics that they enjoy reading about or learning about nature by taking a walk through the bush.
Don’t Reward Too Much
Studies show that children who are intrinsically motivated to learn are more successful throughout their academic lives. In order to encourage your child to be intrinsically motivated, do not rely heavily on rewards.
Rewards work for short amounts of time, but eventually your child will grow bored and will not want to keep learning. Learning should be about learning, not about rewards.
Encourage intrinsic motivation through connection. When a child feels excited and connected to what they are doing, they are more engaged and will be more interested in doing it.
Do not make the mistake of focusing entirely on the finished result. The journey and how your child got there is also very important. When you notice your child working hard, praise them for it. If they make mistakes, help them fix them and avoid criticism.
If something is clearly not working, sit down with your child and discuss different learning strategies. Perhaps the way in which they are trying to solve the maths problem isn’t working. Perhaps they need to try a visual way instead of an auditory one. Every child is different and every child learns differently.
Early Learning Centres
Early learning schools provide an excellent opportunity for your child to learn how to learn. They provide a safe and nurturing educational environment where your child can learn whilst interacting with other children and having a good time.
One of the great things about early learning centres is that they help your child learn a variety of things, from how to focus to how to socially develop. These are all skills that will be very valuable for when your child enters school and other academic areas.
Another great thing is that they facilitate learning through their very environment. Indoor and outdoor environments, specially tailored programs, and fun activities all encourage learning and development.
